GONZALES — Two men were arrested after police said they caught them with illegal drugs.

On Fri. Sept. 22, Officer Mark Hastings pulled over a car in the 2000 block of Highway 183 for speeding, Capt. Allen Taylor reported.

Hastings identified the driver as Jose Hernandez, 20, of Red Rock, and a passenger as Eloy Perez, 22, of Smithville. While speaking with the car’s occupants the officer detected the smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle, Taylor said.

During a search of the car, Perez admitted to being in possession of a container that had marijuana and what was suspected to be tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Hernandez was found to be in possession of marijuana as well, and both men were arrested, Taylor said.

While at Gonzales County Jail, Perez told officers that he had cocaine in his possession, but none was found. Officers returned to the scene of the arrest, where they found the cocaine on the ground.

Perez is charged with possession of a controlled substance in penalty group 2 less than 1 gram and possession of marijuana. Hernandez is charged with possession of marijuana.
