Gonzales’ Ericka Hernandez earns third trip to state meet 

KINGSVILLE — Ericka Hernandez will be making her third trip to the UIL state track meet after qualifying for meet in both events at the UIL Region IV-4A meet at Javelina Stadium at Texas A&M-Kingsville last Saturday.

Hernandez came home with two silver medals, placing second in the discus toss with her distance of 142 feet. In the shot put she took second with her toss of 40-1 ¾. Keaundra Cray took ninth in the shot put with her toss of 35-1 ½.

Meanwhile, Molly Barnick placed seventh in the high jump with her jump of 5 feet.

In the races, Haley Garza took 16th in the 1600-meter race with her time of 6:00.01.

Shania Lloyd finished 10th in the prelims of the 100-meter dash with her time of 12.96 seconds.

Hernandez will be making her third appearance at the state meet, her first time for the discus toss. She took sixth in shot put in 2013 as a freshman with her distance of 36-6 ¾ and second in 2014 as a sophomore with her distance of 41-7 ¼.

The state meet will be held at at the Mike Myers Track Complex in Austin from May 12-14. Hernandez will be competing on Friday May 13 and Saturday May 14.


Mustangs’ Sam Moore qualifies for state

CONVERSE — The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs sent three to the regional meet at Judson High in Converse over the weekend, with just one qualifying for the state meet in Austin next week.

Samuel Moore competed and took second in the high jump on Saturday with his jump of 6 feet, 4 inches, qualifying him for the UIL state meet coming up.

Moore was bested by Jarrell’s Kaden Singh who took first with his jump of 6-4.

He also competed in the long jump as he got a distance of 21-3 ¼. Unfortunately, that placed him in fifth which didn’t qualify him for a state meet in that event. He was bested by Santa Rosa’s Leo Lara who had a jump of 21-5. Taking first was Comfort’s Quinlan Sweeney as he was measured at 22-3. Hebbronville’s Arturo Huerta took second at 22-2 and Marion’s Brady Edmiston took third at 21-8 ½.

At the track, Justice Torres took seventh in the 400-meter race with his time of 53.4 seconds. Devin Hester took eighth in the 300-meter hurdles with his time at 41.81 seconds.

Moore will be making his appearance at the Mike Myers Track Complex on Friday, May 13 for the UIL Conference 3A Long Jump event.


Waelder to send Tracy Moore to state 

PFLUGERVILLE — The Waelder Wildcats track and field team will be sending one athlete to the state meet in Austin next week after their regional competition from Saturday.

Tracy Moore is the lone representative as he took second place in the long jump competition with his distance of 21 feet, 1 /14 inches.

Moore also competed in the 100-meter race, taking fifth with his time of 11.67 seconds. He was edged out by Austwell-Tivoli’s Britten Battles who took fourth with his time of 11.64 seconds. Taking first was Burotn’s Jamon Bradley at 11.34, Calvert’s Christopher Luster took second as he was clocked in at 11.39 and Gholson’s David Smith took third with his time of 11.48 seconds.

Meanwhile, Steven Ewing took ninth in the 1600-meter race with his time of 5:14.59.

In the prelims, the 4x200-meter team of Moore, Sammie Reyes, Aaron Wilson and Ewing took 11th with their time of 1:39.51.

Moore will travel to the Mike Myers Track Complex on May 14 for the long jump event. The state meet runs from May 12-14.
