GONZALES — A local man — who was already wanted on various charges — now faces additional charges after police said he drove recklessly through the Walmart parking lot before leading them on a brief car chase.

At 2 p.m. July 6, Officer Tyler Wendland was called to the Walmart parking lot by Capt. Gayle Autry, Capt. Allen Taylor reported. Autry informed Wendland that a man with outstanding arrest warrants was in the parking lot. Wendland pulled into the parking lot and saw the man driving recklessly. The officer flashed his lights to pull him over, but the man continued driving out of the parking lot at a high rate of speed. He turned left, heading south on College St. driving on the wrong side of the road before finally pulling over at the intersection of College and Cone Sts., Taylor said.

Officers identified the driver as Dwayne McNew, 49, of Gonzales. A background check on McNew revealed he had three warrants for his arrest out of Gonzales County — including charges of duty on striking an unattended vehicle, driving while license invalid and possession of a controlled substance in penalty group 1.

McNew was arrested and taken to Gonzales County Jail. He is charged with felony evading in a vehicle and driving while license invalid.
