Apache cross-country teams advance to regionals

SEGUIN — The Gonzales Apaches boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams will be headed to Corpus Christi after both teams qualified, advancing from the District 30-4A meet that took place in Seguin on Tuesday.

On the girls side, Veronica Moreno led the way with her fourth-place finish with her time of 12:34. Maria Vazquez placed 10th with a time of 12:59, Genevieve Kelley 12th with a time of 13:10, Brooklyn Simper 13th with a time of 13:12, Stephanie Reyna 14th with a time of 13:13, Krisanta Esquivel 17th with a time of 13:19 and Emily Moore 21st with a time of 13:34, good for 53 points. The Lady Apaches placed second behind Pleasanton who had 45 points. Pleasanton was led by Karolyna Martinez who finished first overall with a time of 11:54.

For the boys, three Apaches finished in the top 10, giving Gonzales a third-place score of 60 points behind La Vernia who had 42 and Pleasanton who had 45. Antonio Hernandez led the way Apaches with a fifth place time of 16:53. Avery Almaguer took sixth with a time of 17:06 while Daniel Garcia took eighth with a time of 17:12. Other racers include Avram Almaguer who placed 20th, Carlos Mendoza 21st, Mark Burek 22nd and Alejandro Reyna 27th.

In junior varsity, both boys and girls teams placed second. The 7th grade Lady Apaches placed fourth as a team, the 8th grade Lady Apaches finished first, the 7th grade boys placed fourth and the 8th grade boys placed third.

The Region IV-4A meet takes place at Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Monday, Oct. 28. The Class 4A girls race is expected to begin at 11 a.m. while the 4A boys race is right after at 11:20 a.m.
