WIMBERLEY — The Gonzales Apaches are on a roll as they gained another tournament victory this time at the Wimberley Invitational as the boys’ team took first with 334 strokes, beating Blanco who placed second with 351 strokes. St. Michaels would take third with 353 strokes.

The win is a notable one, as the Apaches took down District 27-4A mates Wimberley, and Navarro. Wimberley’s Navy team took fourth with 361 while their Red team had 403. Navarro had 373 strokes.

Leading the way was Jake Barnick with 78, good for top golfer of the tournament.

“He came one inch from chipping in for a two on a par four [on hole 18],” head coach J. Lynn Barnick said. “But he got the birdie and the win.”

Right behind was Mason Richter who took second place with his score of 79. Other scores include Kolby Kifer with 88, Tristian Riley with 89 and Wade Miller with 99.

The Lady Apache golfers took sixth in the field of seven teams with their total of 479 strokes. Leading the way was La Vernia with 378, followed by Wimberley Navy with 406 and Cuero with 417. Navarro placed fifth with 465 strokes.

Kiley Allen took top spot on the team as she scored a 97. Rebekah Baker had 123, Ashlynn Stewart had 129 and Bre Wolff had 130 strokes.

The Gonzales golfers are hoping for a practice run in Corpus Christi this Spring Break on the regional courses, though questionable depending on weather conditions.
