Apache soccer teams set to see new faces in new alignment

According to the UIL website, the Gonzales Apaches will be taking on two new teams in the 2017-18 season due to the new district alignment.

Region IV-4A, where the Apaches reside in, did not have a District 28 set, which allowed teams in District 27 a bye in the bi-district round of the playoffs. Region I-4A and Region II-4A also had a “bye” district each.

In the realignment, Gonzales, along with a handful of familiar district mates, will be moving from District 26-4A to the previously vacant District 28-4A. The new seven-team district will have Gonzales (this past season’s district champion in boys’ soccer) Austin Eastside Memorial, Giddings, La Grange and Smithville. They add Caldwell and Columbus to fill out the district.

Taylor is now aligned with the new District 26-4A with Burnet, Lampasas, Leander Glenn and Liberty Hill while Cameron Yoe moves to District 25-4A with Salado, Florence, Jarrell, Little River Academy and Georgetown Gateway (only the girls’ team).

With the new realignment, the Apaches will take on a team out of District 27-4A in the bi-district round. The district has tough opponents such as Bandera (Region IV-4A finalist in boys’ soccer), Boerne (boys’ team knocked out Austin Eastside in the area round while the girls’ team are in the state tournament), Fredericksburg (boys’ team lost to Gonzales 2-1 in the area round), Canyon Lake (boys’ team beat the Apaches in the Region IV-4A quarterfinals), Wimberley (girls’ team lost in the Region IV-4A finals against Boerne) and Comfort.
