GONZALES — After that 2-2 tie against La Grange to start District 28-4A play, the Gonzales Apaches have taken it upon themselves to prove a point and show they can repeat as district opponents, outscoring Columbus, Giddings, Smithville and Caldwell 23-1, with the closest game being a 2-1 victory over Giddings.

On Friday, Feb. 9, the Apaches hosted Smithville, knocking off the Tigers 7-0.

Scoring opened in the 4th minute with an aerial cross that met the head of senior Suriel Rangel in the box, who then found the net to give Gonzales an early 1-0 lead. The Apaches doubled their lead in the 22nd minute as junior Anthony Veliz drew a penalty kick with 18:45 left in the half. Luis Leija took advantage of the foul and converted on the penalty to go up 2-0 in the game. Three minutes later, Veliz broke through Smithville’s defense and beat the keeper to give the Apaches a 3-0 lead headed to the half.

Veliz added a whopping three more goals in the second half while Adrian Rodriguez also added a goal, ending the game with a 7-0 victory for the Apaches.

On Tuesday, the Apaches won 7-0 again, outscoring Caldwell 5-0 in the first half, then adding two more goals in the second half for the seven-goal victory. Sophomore Daniel Cruz had a big night, scoring four goals in the process. Veliz, Hervey Mata and Erbin Orduna each had a goal.
