Apaches finish 10th at golf state meet

HORSESHOE BAY — The Gonzales Apaches finished out their season at the UIL Class 4A state golf meet, placing 10th amongst the 12 state qualifiers at Apple Rock Golf Course in Horseshoe Bay.

The team of Wade Miller, Kolby Kifer, Tristan Riley, Jake Barnick and Mason Richter combined for 720 strokes, 10 behind ninth-place team Huffman Hargrave and seven above Big Spring, who placed 11th. The Apaches finished day one with 344 strokes and day two with 376 strokes.

Leading the way for the Apaches were Barnick and Richter who two-day totals of 169 strokes were good for 29th overall in the 72-person tournament. Barnick finished the first day with 84 and the second with 85 while Richter had 81 on day one and 88 the second day.

Riley finished the tournament with 180 strokes (86 on day one, 96 on day two), Kifer finished with 211 (93 and 118) and Miller finished with 220 (111 and 109).

Taking the top spot was Argyle. The state champions scored a total of 633 strokes. Fredericksburg placed second with 646 while Monahans won a playoff for third place with 649 strokes, besting Robinson.

Individually, Brownwood’s Jaryn Pruitt took gold with 141 strokes. Madisonville’s Sam Bennett placed second with 146 while Midlothian Heritage’s Will Traylor placed third.

The Apaches will graduate Wade Miller, Kolby Kifer, Tristan Riley and Jake Barnick. Mason Richter returns next season as a rising sophomore.
