Apaches take home medals from Stockdale tennis meet

STOCKDALE — The Gonzales Apaches tennis team came away with some medals after traveling to Stockdale for a tournament last week.

In girls’ singles, Madalin Kocian was named consolation winner. She lost to Beeville’s Karla Chavez 1-8, beat Luling’s McKenna Hartsfield 8-2, beat Kaleigh Patek (Cuero) 8-4 and took down Erin Sanders (Cole) 8-2. Valeria Aguayo made it to the quarterfinals, taking down Pearsall’s Judith Nieto 8-3, losing to Goliad’s Danielle Garza 8-2 and beating Cuero’s Maddie Etlinger 8-2.

In boys’ singles, Matthew Grauke made it to the quarterfinals, beating Beeville’s Robert Luna 8-1, winning against Navarro’s J.C. Alexander 8-2 and losing to Seguin’s Diego Gonzales 4-8. Meanwhile, Nick Espinoza made it to the semifinals of the consolation bracket, losing to Beeville’s Mark Carbajal 4-8, beating Navarro’s Clayton Old 8-2, winning against Luling’s Jesse Everett 8-0 and losing to Pearsall’s Josh Pawlich 3-8.

In boys’ doubles, the team of Jacob Burek and Caden Low took second place. They beat Stockdale’s Aguilar/Forester 8-2, Cuero’s Villarreal/Staats 8-2, Runge’s Nunez/Ramirez 8-3 and finally lost to Stockdale’s Marquez/Akin 3-6, 3-6. The team of Sebastian Cristan and Brandon Gomez beat Karnes City’s Garza/Perales 8-2 and lost to Runge’s Guitierrez/Ramirez 3-8.

In mixed doubles, Chelsea McCauley and Josh Landi placed fourth. They beat Goliad’s Cosper/Koehne 8-5, won 8-1 over Cuero’s Cuellar/Buchorn, lost to Navarro’s Hoffman/Arguello 2-8 and lost to Cuero’s Hendrick/Green 2-8. Roma Gallardo and Eli Whitescarver took down Karnes City’s Leal/Bianchi 8-6 and lost to Cuero’s Hendrick/Green 2-8.

JV winners include Sylvia Hernandez/Mei Williamson taking third in girls’ doubles, Lane Vaught/Cody Oakes taking first in boys’ doubles and Drew Rodriguez taking the consolation winner in boys’ singles.
