Apaches win gold at Yorktown meet

YORKTOWN — The Gonzales Apaches and Nixon-Smiley Mustangs traveled to Yorktown for a powerlifting invitational, with two Apache lifters taking first in their respective weight class and a Nixon-Smiley lifter placing fourth in his.

On the boys’ side, Gonzales’ Alex Ortiz placed first in the 165-pound weight class with his lifts of 500 pounds squat, 260 pounds bench press and 430 pounds dead lift for a total of 1,015 pounds. Sergio Torres, another Apache lifter, placed third in the same weight class with lifts of 375-210-380 for a total of 945. Nixon-Smiley’s Efren Olalde was 12th with his lifts of 295 squad, 0 bench press and 375 dead lift.

Gonzales’ Trent Wilkerson placed second in the 242-pound weight class with splits of 445-230-385 for his total of 1,060 pounds. Other lifters for the Apaches include Bryan Garza taking fifth in 198-pounds with splits of 355-210-380 for a total of 945, Vicente Reyna taking fifth in 220 with splits of 345-225-405 for a total of 975 pounds, Brenden Rodriguez taking seventh in the same weight class with splits of 400-195-315 for a total of 910 pounds, Cameron Mileham in the same 220 class with splits of 335-185-275 for a total of 795 pounds and Jimmy Bustos who placed 10th with splits of 450-265-0 for a total of 715 pounds.

Other Nixon-Smiley boys’ lifters include fourth-place winner Mateo Abrego who placed in the 148-pound weight class with lifts of 315-145-325 for a total of 785 pounds. Luis Perez also lifted, placing sixth in the 198-pound class with lifts of 330-195-385 for 910 pounds. Jonah Goodwin scratched in the 198-pound weight class.

On the girls’ side, Gonzales’ Khelsea Cray came away with gold in the 148-pound weight class with her splits of 315-140-325 for a total of 780 pounds. She beat out fellow Apache Amberleigh Watson who placed fifth with splits of 215-105-225 for a total of 545 pounds. Sydney Clack placed third in the 220-pound weight class with lifts of 270-105-250 for her total of 625 pounds. She was beat out by Goliad’s Malayasia Rubit who totaled 690 pounds and Karnes City’s Jessica Diaz who totaled 630 pounds.

Other Lady Apache lifters include Alyssa DeLuna who disqualified in the 132-pound weight class after she lifted 230 pounds in squat and 85 pounds in bench press. Cristal Garcia scratched in the 165-pound weight class.

Nixon-Smiley’s lone Lady Mustang lifter was Tatiana Castillo who placed sixth in the 220-pound weight class with lifts of 235-0-255 to total to 490 pounds.
