Nixon-Smiley heads to bye after homecoming loss

The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs (2-3) gave up 35 straight points before scoring a touchdown of their own in a homecoming 63-28 loss last Friday night to Falls City (4-1). Falls City came away with 215 yards rushing and 232 yards passing while the Mustangs had 217 yards rushing and 24 yards passing.

Dario Jantes scored three touchdowns, one on a 17-yard run, one on an eight-yard run and another on an 88-yard kickoff return. Jantes finished the game with 10 rushes for 107 yards.

Chris Brown added a touchdown run as well.

Defensively, Robert Garcia came away with an interception. Mario Ponce was the leading tackler with seven solo tackles and one assisted. Mateo Abrego added five solo tackles and three assisted while Chris Brown had four solo tackles and three assisted.

The Mustangs take on Poth on Oct. 11 to open district play.

Cardinals continue long non-district season

The Shiner St. Paul Cardinals (3-2) lost in a close 25-17 game against Weimar on the road last Friday. Kai Giese scored twice, once from six yards out and another from eight yards out. He finished the game with eight rushes for 38 yards. Giese also went 4-for-10 passing for 46 yards. Zak Johnson was the leading rusher, carrying the ball 20 times for 112 yards. Carson Reese added six rushes for 43 yards and Noah Boedeker had eight carries for 19 yards.

Shiner St. Paul travels to Boerne on Friday to take on Boerne Geneva (1-4) with a 7 p.m. kickoff. Boerne Geneva’s scoring has been up and down throughout the season, with the team’s highest total coming on a 49-0 win on Sept. 6 and their lowest output a 41-6 loss against Houston Second Baptist on Aug. 30.

Luling finishes non-district winless

Despite improving week after week offensively, the Eagles finished their non-district season with their fifth straight loss, a 48-29 tilt against Smithville. Luling (0-5) travels to Goliad (0-5) on Friday, Oct. 11, to begin their tough District 14-3ADI season.

Unbeaten, state-ranked Shiner hosts Lexington

The unbeaten #2 Shiner Comanches (5-0) limited Goliad to just 88 yards of offense as they won 55-6, their fifth straight victory of the season. The Comanches are ranked second in 2A Division I according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football state rankings. Shiner host a winless Lexington team on Friday, with kickoff set at 7:30 pm.
