LEESVILLE — A crowd of several hundred people attended the annual Leesville Country Fair on Saturday, where folks of all ages were treated to live music, good food and fun games.

Fair Chairman Pat Meyer said the event drew a good crowd - which he estimated to be about 400 people.

“Our turnout was pretty good, about what we get on average years,” Meyer said. “We did at least as well with the money as we have on any other year. The fair patrons were very generous with their support.”

This year’s fair — the community’s 31st consecutive one — once again provided fun for the whole family with an array of events including a hayride, children’s activities including face painting, a petting zoo, ring throw, bounce house, horseshoes and bean bag toss. The Belmont Fire Department was on hand with a fire truck with lights ablaze, as well as Gonzales County sheriff’s deputies with a patrol car doing the same. Also featured was a prizes raffle, which will included gift cards for restaurants and prizes in value from $25 to $500. The package was wrapped up with a performance from the Clint Martin Band.

A highlight of the event was during the live auction in which Jim Steele, a resident of the Leesville community, won the autographed Earl Campbell football jersey, which had been donated to the fair. He then gave it to Meyer, who went to college with Campbell back in the 1970s.

“He said he bought it for me, and I thought it was really generous of him,” Meyer said. “I met Earl once and have always been a big fan of his, so that sure brought back some memories.”
