NIXON — Originally, the Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs had a scheduled game on Tuesday against San Antonio Sunnybrook. But after Sunnybrook canceled, head coach Scott Jones was able to get a game against the Adelaide Blue Devils, a girls’ basketball team out of Australia.

The Blue Devils are a group of women out of Adelaide, Australia who tour the United States around this time of the year.

Tuesday night, the Lady Mustangs took on the South Australian team and were beaten 85-31.

Nixon-Smiley could not get things going on the offensive end as their usual strategy of quickness and getting to the basket while drawing fouls near the paint didn’t work. The Blue Devils were able to match Nixon-Smiley’s quickness while also using their height to get multiple clean blocks throughout the night.

With the score at 4-2, Adelaide ran off a 17-0 run before Nixon-Smiley’s Celeste Arriaga added two points from the free-throw line to cut the lead to 19-4. Arriaga later found Lexi Trammell for another two points, then Trammell added two from the free-throw line before Adelaide ended with a last-second bucket to end the quarter up 21-8.

Adelaide continued their dominance, added 27 points in the second, 20 in the third and 17 in the fourth.

Arriaga finished the night with 21 points. Trammell had 10.

The Lady Mustangs are in a three-day tournament in Poteet, but results from yesterday’s games were unavailable before press. Nixon-Smiley hosts Schulenburg on Tuesday with tipoff scheduled at 6:15 p.m.
