Barborak tops Mercer in primary election

Gonzales County will have a new County Treasurer as Sheryl Barborak defeated Jo Ann Mercer in the Republican primary election. Barborak led the polls with 872 votes, for 54.20 percent. Mercer, the incumbent, won 737 votes, for 45.80 percent.

With no opponent from the Democratic Primary side of the race, Barborak is slated to be Gonzales County’s new treasurer.

Republican Primary

In the Republican race for United States Senator, Ted Cruz led the polls and received 1,315,455 votes for 85.34 percent; Mary Miller received 94,291 votes for 6.11 percent; Bruce Jacobson Jr. won 64,472 votes for 4.18 percent; Stefano De Stefano took 44,268 votes for 2.87 percent; and Geraldine Sam won 22,778 votes for 1.47 percent.

Cruz also led the polls in Gonzales and garnered 1,426 votes or 88.35 percent of the county’s Republican votes.

In the Republican race for U.S. Representative, District 27, Bech Bruun and Michael Cloud are facing a runoff election since neither took at least 50 percent of the vote. Bruun received 15,845 votes, for 36.09 percent; and Cloud won 14,866 votes for 33.86 percent.

Other contenders in the race were: Christopher K. Mapp, with 5,302 or 12.07 percent of votes; Jerry Hall, with 1,847 or 9.03 percent of votes; John Grunwald, with 3,038 or 8.23 percent of votes; and, Eddie Gassman, with 1,226 or 2.79 percent of votes.

In Gonzales County, Michael Cloud led the polls with 451 votes for 41.68 percent; and Bruun followed with 263 votes for 24.31 percent.

U.S. Representative District 34 Rey Gonzales was uncontested in the Republican Primary.

In the Republican race for Governor, the Incumbent Governor Greg Abbott won 1,390,220 votes, for 90.39 percent; Barbara Krueger received 127,230 votes, for 8.27 percent; and SECEDE Kilgore took 20,418 votes, for 1.32 percent.

In Gonzales County, Abbott led polls with 1,544 votes for 93.58 percent.

Incumbent Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick won the race for Lieutenant Governor with 1,164 votes, for 75.91 percent. Scott Milder took 369,450 votes, for 24.08 percent.

In Gonzales County, Patrick led 1,267 votes, for 78.45 percent.

Attorney General Ken Paxton and Comptroller of Public Accounts Glenn Hegar were uncontested in the Republican Primary.

In the race for Commissioner of the General Land Office Incumbent George P. Bush led the polls with 857,860 votes, for 58.18 percent; Jerry Patterson took 437,844 votes, for 29.69 percent; Davey Edwards took 100,867 votes, for 6.84 percent; and, Rick Range won 77,723 votes, for 5.27 percent.

In Gonzales County, Bush led the polls and won 946 votes, for 60.49 percent.

In the Republican race for Commissioner of Agriculture Incumbent Sid Miller led with 757,649 votes, for 55.83 percent; Jim Hogan won 308,821 votes, for 22.76 percent; and Trey Blocker took 290,356 votes, for 21.39 percent.

In Gonzales County Miller also led, with 717 votes, for 49.72 percent.

Incumbent Railroad Commission Christi Craddick topped Weston Martinez with her 1,037,403 votes to his 330,674. Percentages were her 75.82 to his 24.17.

In Gonzales County Craddick led the polls and took 1,169 votes, for 80.07 percent

Jimmy Blacklock was uncontested in the Republican Primary for Justice, Supreme Court Place 2; John Devine was uncontested in the Republican Primary for Justice, Supreme Court Place 4; and, Jeff Brown was uncontested in the Republican Primary for Justice, Supreme Court Place 6.

In the race for Presiding Judge, Court of Criminal Appeals, Incumbent Sharon Keller topped the polls with 671,371 votes, for 52.14 percent; and David Bridges took 616,096 votes, for 47.85 percent.

In Gonzales County Bridges topped Keller 824 (60.19 percent) to 545 (39.81 percent).

Barbara Parker Harvey was uncontested in the republican Primary for Judge, Court of Criminal Appeals – Place 7.

In the Republican race for Judge, Court of Criminal Appeals – Place 8 Michelle Slaughter topped the polls with 666,779 votes, for 52.84 percent; Jat Brandon took 387,767 votes for 30.73 percent; and, Dub Waldrip won 207,213 votes, for 16.42 percent.

State Representative, District 17 John Cyrier was uncontested in the Republican Primary.

Ernie Aliseda was uncontested for Chief Justice, 13th Court of Appeals; Greg Perkes was uncontested for Justice, 13th Court of Appeals – Place 2; Jaime Tijerina was uncontested for Justice 13th Court of Appeals – Place 4; Clarissa Silva was uncontested for Justice, 13th Court of Appeals – Place 5.

Pat Davis was uncontested for Gonzales County Judge; Janice Sutton was uncontested for Gonzales County District Clerk; Lona Ackman was uncontested for Gonzales County Clerk.

In the race for Gonzales County Treasurer Sheryl Barborak led the polls with 872 votes, for 54.20 percent; Incumbent Jo Ann Mercer won 737 votes, for 45.80 percent.

Seth M. Fullilove was uncontested for County Surveyor.

Donnie Brzozowski was uncontested for Gonzales County Pct. 2 Commissioner; Collie Boatright was uncontested for Gonzales County Pct. 4 Commissioner.

Deidra Voigt was uncontested for Gonzales County Justice of the Peace Pct. 1; Jesse Almaraz was uncontested for JP Pct. 3; and, Darryl Becker was uncontested for JP Pct. 4.

Richard Green was uncontested for Gonzales County Republican Party Chairman.

Democratic Primary

In the Democratic race for U.S. Senator, Beto O’Rourke led the polls with 641,129 votes, for 61.82 percent. Sema Hernandez won 246,045 votes, for 23.71 percent; and, Edward Kimbrough took 150,038 votes, for 14.46 percent.

In Gonzales, O’Rourke took 142 votes, for 52.79 percent.

In the Democratic race for U.S. Representative, District 27 candidates are headed for a runoff, since none pulled 50 percent of the vote. Raul (Roy) Barrera led the polls with 8,733 votes, for 41.21 percent; Eric Holguin followed with 4,939 votes, for 23.31 percent; Vanessa Edwards Foster won 4,041 votes, for 19.07 percent; and, Ronnie McDonald got 3,474 votes, for 16.39 percent.

In Gonzales County, voters also picked Barrera, with 68 votes, for 36.96 percent.

Filemon D. Vela was uncontested in the Democratic Primary for U.S. Representative, District 34.

Lupe Valdez led the polls in the Democratic Primary for Governor. Valdez will face Andrew White in a runoff. Valdez won 42.90 percent of the vote, with 436,405 votes. White won 27.39 percent of the vote with 278,623 votes in his favor.

Other Democratic Gubernatorial candidates were: Grady Yarbrough, with 54,539 votes, for 5.36 percent; Jeffrey Payne, with 48,339 votes, for 4.75 percent; Adrian Ocegueda with 44,761 votes, for 4.40 percent; Tom Wakely, with 34,829 votes, for 3.42 percent; James Jolly Clark, with 21,899 votes, for 2.15 percent; and Joe Mumbach, with 13,893 votes, for 1.36 percent.

In Gonzales County Valdez topped the polls with 87 votes, for 32.58 percent of the vote.

In the Democratic Primary for Lieutenant Governor Mike Collier led the polls with 501,580 votes, for 52.37 percent; and, Michael Cooper followed with 456,093 votes, for 47.62 percent.

In Gonzales County Collier led with 141 votes, for 57.09 percent.

Justin Nelson was unopposed in the Democratic Primary race for Attorney General.

In the race for Comptroller of Public Accounts, Joi Chevalier won with 484,154 votes, for 51.85 percent of the vote; and, Tim Mahoney followed with 449,468 votes, or 48.14 percentIn Gonzales Chevalier took 124 votes, or 50.41 percent.

The Democratic Primary Commissioner of the General Land Office race was led by Miguel Suazo, with 660,450 votes, for 70 percent; followed by Tex Morgan, with 283,173 votes, for 30 percent.

In Gonzales, Suazo led with 146 votes, or 58.87 percent.

Kim Olson was uncontested in the Democratic Primary for Commissioner of Agriculture.

Roman McAllen led the polls in the Democratic Primary race for Railroad Commissioner, with 537,219 votes, or 58.50 percent; and Chris Spellmon took 381,036 votes, for 41.49 percent.

In Gonzales McAllen led by one vote in a 119 to 120 split. Race percentages were split 49.79 to 50.21.

Democratic candidates for Supreme Court Justice were all uncontested, including: Steven Kirkland, Place 2; R.K. Sandill, Place 4; and, Kathy Cheng, Place 6.

Maria T. (Terri) Jackson was unopposed in the Democratic Primary for Presiding Judge, Court of Criminal Appeals; and, Ramona Franklin was unopposed for Judge, Court of Criminal appeals, Place 7.

Marisa B. Perez led the polls in the Democratic Primary for Member, State Board of Education, District 3. She won 60,027 votes, for 75.93 percent. Dan Arellano took 19,022 votes, for 24.06 percent.

Michelle Ryan was unopposed in the primary for State Rep., Dist. 17.

Dori Contreras led polls in the race for Chief Justice, 13th Court of Appeals, with 169 votes, for 67.33 percent; and, Ray Thomas followed with 82 votes, for 32.67 percent.

Justice candidates for the 13th Court of Appeals were unopposed, including Nora Longoria, Place 2; Rudy Delgado, Place 4; and Gina Benavides, Place 5.

Yolanda Messman was unopposed for Gonzales County Democratic Party Chair.
