Betty Lou Harris

Betty Lou Harris, 85, of Gonzales, passed away surrounded by family and loved ones on Saturday, June 8th, 2019. Betty Lou was born March 30th, 1934 in Luling, the only child of loving parents, James Lonnie Kifer and Lida Veta Daniels Kifer. She met her husband, Rama Stone Harris when was age 14 and Rama was 16. She married him a year later, on October 6th, 1949. She graduated from high school in Smiley soon after. Betty Lou is preceded in death by her two sons, Gary Keith Harris and Paul Kevin Harris, and survived by her husband and grandson, Joseph Daniel Harris. Betty Lou taught Sunday school to young children for many years and enjoyed memberships in a local garden club and super club. She was a member of Eastside Baptist Church.

Betty Lou, or “Mawmaw” as she was affectionately known by her family, was a kind, generous, and fun-loving woman. She was a skilled homemaker who loved to decorate, especially crafting beautiful floral arrangements and setting elaborate dinner tables. Betty Lou was also a determined hard worker, who always found a way to complete any task she set her mind to. She was a very social person who absolutely loved to entertain. She would often utilize her decorating and culinary skills during her decade’s long membership in a monthly super club composed of lifelong friends whom she cherished dearly. Betty was an artist and hobbyist who dabbled in and mastered many crafts, of which she was most proud, were her ceramics. She enjoyed gardening and teaching her grandson how to care for her plants. Betty Lou liked to travel, she explored much of California with her husband in their early years of marriage, visited many national parks and monuments, took vacations to Las Vegas, and went on multiple cruises. In her later years she enjoyed spending time at home with her husband and son Paul, going to the library, and visiting with her grandson, his girlfriend, and their two dogs that she spoiled and doted on.

Betty Lou and her husband met young, fell in love fast, and remained deeply in love and devoted to one another throughout 69 years of marriage. She raised and lost two sons and was very close with and proud of her only grandchild, Joseph. Betty Lou loved her family and friends deeply and was easy to love in return. Her smile and fun-loving demeanor could not help but rub off on those around her. Betty Lou’s life, the bonds she made, the lessons she imparted, and the good times she shared will leave a lasting impression on those lucky enough to have known her, and her presence will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2019 in Seydler-Hill Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Ramirez. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10 a.m. prior to the services.
