'Big Give' benefits Gonzales

GONZALES — You will have a 24-hour period this coming Tuesday to give big to local non-profit organizations through the Big Give SA fundraising drive.

The third installment of the Big Give SA runs midnight to midnight on May 3. It is billed as a day of giving that “brings donors and nonprofits together by creating a shared region-wide experience and connecting people to the causes that matter to them the most.”

Last year $4.3 million was raised for 882 charitable causes in and around the 14-county area surrounding San Antonio. This year's goal is $6 million.

Donors can give at www.thebiggivesa.org and there is a tab in which to select participating Gonzales County organizations that are eligible. All donations are tax-deductible and there is a $10 minimum and no maximum.

Participating Gonzales County organizations are Connections Individual and Family Services Inc., Friends of Gonzales Animal Shelter, the Crystal Theatre, Norma's House, Gonzales Youth Center, Meadow Haven Horse Rescue, Nixon-Smiley Livestock Show and the Retirement Sanctuary for Laboratory Animals, Inc.

Barbara Crozier from the Crystal Theatre signed her organization up for the Big Give after she did a bit of research and found that they qualified for the program. Any gift from small to large will go to the organizations, she said, which all do their best with the monies they currently have but can always do with more.

Additionally, programs are entered in a contest in which matching funds can be distributed at a later date.

“It's a great way for local funds to be matched,” she said.

The Crystal and its Shakespeare Ninja troupe are a life-long project of Crozier's and thus why she has gone to lengths to get them involved in the Big Give. Funds help students with acting and stage skills that can be used in many facets of life away from the theatre. Also, her actors are preparing material for the upcoming summer workshops that teach Texas history beside some of Shakespeare's greatest works.
