Billy Ray DuBose, 83, of Gonzales, passed away Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015. Bill was born Feb. 20, 1932 on the family farm near the community of Saturn to Seth Thomas DuBose and Frankie Beaver DuBose. He attended school in the Saturn Country School and graduated from high school in Waelder with the class of 1950. Bill married Billie Jeanette Sanders on July 24, 1956 in Floresville.

As a youth Bill enjoyed hunting squirrels and rabbits with his dog and his cousin Ely.   He rode his horse to the country school in Saturn. Bill worked the family farm doing chores that involved milking cows, working in the cotton fields and the corn fields and caring for the livestock.

After high school he drove a bread truck and then a milk truck before going into the oil fields. He worked nearly every position in the oil field with several companies working his way up to tool pusher for Cox Oil Company in Luling.

Bill had served his country honorably in the U.S. Army and served in the reserves as well. Bill enjoyed dancing with his wife Billie and working in his garden where he grew amazing tomatoes, peas and squash to name a few. He gave most of his produce away just to see people enjoy the fruits of his labor.

Bill truly enjoyed the camaraderie of the afternoon coffee group at the Dairy Queen and sitting at his picnic table in the evenings at his home.

Bill loved his daughter, Linda. He wasn’t always demonstrative in showing his love, but he loved her very much. He taught her to be proud of whom she was, to work hard and not necessarily for money, because money doesn’t define you or buy respect, but working hard is a reward within itself. Bill was who he was, he had a clever wit and didn’t mince words and folks had to accept him that way.

Billy Ray DuBose is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Linda Gail and Tommy McCabe of Yoakum; grandchildren, Ryan McCabe and Lanna of Ennis, Audra and Donny Varkey of Deer Park, Gwen and Neil Richardson of Van Vleck; great-grandchildren, Kayla, Kirby, Jaelen, Tylan, Tierra, Gabriel, Luke and Emma. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Billie Jeannette DuBose; sister, Murl Jorgenson; brothers, Selba Lee DuBose and James Seth Dubose and his parents, Seth Thomas and Frankie DuBose.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29 in Saturn Cemetery with Rev. Jonathan Mielke officiating. Pallbearers are Ryan McCabe, Donny Varkey, Neil Richardson, Jaelen McCabe, Tylan Love and Kayla McCabe.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at the funeral home prior to the graveside service. Memorials may be made to the Saturn Cemetery Association or the charity of one’s choice.  Arrangements are under the care and direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home.
