GONZALES — A local man faces felony charges after police said he took someone’s vehicle without permission, drove under the influence of alcohol and led officers on a chase when they tried to pull him over.

At 12:19 a.m. Oct. 7, Officer Tomas Garza learned from dispatch that a vehicle was being driven by a Max Ramirez Castillo Jr., 37, without the owner of the vehicle’s permission, Capt. Allen Taylor reported. He was also reported to be intoxicated, and was last seen leaving the 2400 block of Church St.

Upon arrival in the area the officer saw the vehicle in the 1700 block of Church St. and tried to pull it over, but Castillo continued driving, Taylor said. The vehicle then turned left onto Wells St., leading the officer on a chase that went on for several blocks.

“Finally the officer was able to pull in front of the vehicle and stop it at the intersection of College and Wells Streets,” Taylor said.

Despite being asked to step out of the vehicle several times, Castillo reportedly refused to do so. He was eventually escorted from the vehicle by other officers, who had to take him to the ground because he was resisting arrest. After apprehending Castillo, officers noticed the smell of alcohol on his breath, Taylor said.

“The owner of the vehicle gave a statement saying [Castillo] was not supposed to be in the vehicle,” Taylor said. “He didn’t have permission to use it.”

Castillo was taken to Gonzales County Jail. He is charged with driving while intoxicated, evading arrest, no driver’s license and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, which is a state jail felony.
