Cardinals overcome turnovers

SHINER — Shiner St. Paul (4-3, 2-1) escaped Friday night with a 12-8 win despite losing three fumbles and throwing an interception at home against the Schertz John Paul II Guardians (3-3, 1-1).

John Paul II opened up scoring with an eight-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Hunter Albrecht to Antonio Salazar for the 6-0 lead. Austin Barton had a late second-quarter touchdown run, but the extra-point kick was blocked and returned for two points, giving the Guardians an 8-6 lead. The Cardinals then score in the third on a five-yard Joseph Natal run to go up 12-8. Shiner St. Paul would shut out John Paul II the rest of the game.

Barton led the team in rushing with 15 carries for 94 yards and a touchdown. Tre’Zell Jenkins-Perry ran 16 times for 36 yards. Natal ran seven times for 22 yards and a score. Barton also threw six times, completing just one pass to Ryan Bell for 40 yards. He also threw an interception.

The Cardinals travel to San Antonio to take on St. Gerard (1-6, 0-3) this Friday with kickoff set at 7:30 p.m.
