Carlos Clyde Smith III — “Carlos Jr.” to his family — passed away Saturday, Jan. 30 at Hospice Austin’s Christopher House. A native of Gonzales, Carlos was born to Carlos Clyde Smith Jr. and Sue McElroy Smith on Aug. 12, 1932.

He left Gonzales to serve his country in 1954, enlisting as a U.S. Army 2nd Lt. and also served as a Military Police Officer and Commanding Officer. Carlos was proud of his service to the United States Armed Forces.

Returning to Austin, Carlos enrolled at the University of Texas where he graduated from the College of Pharmacy in 1959.  Beginning his professional career in Houston, he also worked in San Antonio and Austin. A career spanning well over 50 years, Carlos was proud to serve the many residents of the northwest Austin community as their respected and trusted corner store pharmacist.

For 34 years, Carlos was married to Linda Peal Smith and to this union was born a son, Boothe Austin “Tab” Smith.

Retiring from a fulfilling career in 2012, Carlos could now truly enjoy time with friends. Daily routines included Whataburger Breakfast Club with “Bacon Bob” and daily visits with J. D. Harper and the beloved Harper sons — Jerry and David — of Crestview Pharmacy, along with one of his oldest and dearest colleagues and friends, B. C. Allen, and monthly lunch dates with fabulous friends Ann Marie, Debra and Toni.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Carlos Clyde Smith Jr. and Sue McElroy Smith; wife, Linda Peal Smith, and stepson, David Peal Baumel.

Carlos is survived by his children, Boothe Austin “Tab” Smith of Austin and Lisa Baumel Moore (Sean) of Round Rock; sister, Mary Ann Smith Corrigan of North Richland Hills; grandchildren, Aja, Clarke and Micah Moore of Round Rock and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Special Thanks to Christopher House for their exceptional and genuine care. Donations may be made the Christopher House in memory of Carlos.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6 in the Colonial Chapel of Cook Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar Blvd. in Austin. A reception will follow in the Austin Room of Cook Walden Funeral Home.
