Carrie Luzelle Beene, 96, of Kingwood, formerly of Nixon, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018. Graveside services are Friday, Aug. 10 at 11 a.m. at Resthaven Memorial Park in Lubbock with son-in-law, Gordon Lockett of Frost officiating. Luzelle was born in Elk City, Okla. on March 19, 1922 to Daniel and Jinnie Bryan. She started school in Vici, Okla. at the age of five and graduated from Littlefield High School in 1938. She completed her bachelor's degree in 1941 from West Texas State Teachers College in Canyon. She later received a master's degree from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene.

Luzelle taught school in Wheeler, Floydada, Groom, Amarillo, Claude, Canadian, Stamford, and Hillsboro. She also served as a special education diagnostician in Stamford, Gorman, and Nixon.

Luzelle married Woodie Eugene Beene of Vaughan on June 1, 1954. Woodie was also an educator, and together they shared a love of learning and teaching for many years in Texas schools.

Another passion of Luzelle's was church work. She was active in Sunday school and missions. Other interests included quilting, cooking, antiquing, and genealogy.

"Beene-Beene" will be remembered by family and friends as hardworking, caring, and loving, always thinking of others before herself. She was especially fond of spending time with her great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, and brother, Joe Dan Bryan of Spearman.

Survivors include her daughter, Judy Lockett and husband, Gordon of Frost; son, Richard Beene and wife, Mercedes of Sun City; granddaughter, Jaryn San Miguel and husband, Dusty of Kingwood; grandson, Joshua Lockett and wife, Autumn of Norman, Okla.; great grandchildren Ava, Levin, Ardyn, Hugo and Ingrid.

In lieu of flowers, donations honoring Luzelle's memory may be made to First Baptist Church, 403 N. Texas Ave., Nixon, Texas 78140.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the staff at Southwestern Care Assisted Living of Kingwood for their loving care.
