Circus attracts crowd in Waelder

WAELDER — Folks from the community as well as out-of-towners got together in City Park on Friday to check out the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus, which was reported to be a sold out event that got a good response from the public.

Waelder New Millennium President Felipe Martinez, whose group sponsored the event, said the show attracted a crowd of over 200 people - which he said was pretty impressive for a Friday night in October.

“Some local businesses bought tickets for the school kids, so it worked out great,” Martinez said. “Even though there were football games going on, we still got a lot of people out.”

During the event, performers bring the magic of the circus to life in two 90-minute performances. The audience was treated to an all-star group of performers and entertainers, including Miss Simone and her single trapeze, Miss Paulina’s “Big & Little” prancing ponies, the Arlise Troupe on their unicycles, Natalie’s American Eskimo Escapades, the flexible Miss Georgia and several others.

Martinez said he and his fellow Lions were thrilled to see young people having such a good time, and that everyone looks forward to the return of the circus in October 2019.

“It’s really a two-way street, because not only are we giving them something they can come see that they’ve maybe never seen before, but we get a lot of satisfaction seeing them have a good time,” Martinez said. “Some of them have never seen a lion before - well, they got to on Friday.”
