Comeback cut short

WAELDER — Down 32-17 midway through the fourth quarter the Waelder Lady Wildcats went on an 11-0 run to cut the lead to four with 1:30 left in the clock. However the San Marcos Home School Lady Panthers were able to play keep away, scoring one of their next four points on the free-throw line while killing valuable time to end the game at 33-28.

“We played a lot better defense this game compare to our last game,” Waelder head coach Carrie York said. “We’re struggling on offense and I think that’s going to be our main thing, moving the ball quick, keeping the defense rolling. Overall our defense got a lot better tonight, a lot better.”

One of York’s main concerns with tonight’s game was their lack of scoring, especially early on. The Lady Panthers shot out to a 13-4 lead at the end of the first before the Lady Cats changed their defense up to a zone to limit their offense. The change did help in the second quarter, with both teams scoring just five points, but midway through the fourth quarter the Lady Cats still went down 32-17.

“We got to make the basket, we got to rebound if we don’t make the basket,” York explained.

During the ensuing 10-0 run, buckets were finally being made including scores from Bre Montgomery, Malorie Puente and Honesty Fields.

“We got a lot of fast breaks,” York said. “We got the ball, [San Marcos] didn’t score, [and] again it comes down to defense.”

Puente and Montgomery led the team in points with eight each. Fields put up seven on the board. Yasmin Porter added four and Laisha Rangel added one.

Waelder travels to Marion for a three-day tournament, though results to yesterday’s game were unavailable before press time.
