Nixon, Waelder and Smiley city officials announced they have seven candidates running at-large for three vacant positions in this year's election.

The city of Nixon has three positions up for re-election – however, the three council members are retiring. Dorothy Riojas, Johnny Mercer and Larry Harrison will not run for council. The election will be held May 6 at Nixon City Hall.

New candidates who applied include Estella Vigil, Joseph Bjorgaard, Lorrie Grogg, Patsy Scherrer-Vigil, Marianne Fatheree, Roy Pena and Justin LaFleur.

In Waelder, it was announced that Rebecca Sykes-Ayala and Mary Trinidad will be vying for positions (at-large) against Valentino Hernandez, Mike Harris and Rocky Quintero - whose seats are up. Incumbents (Mayor) Roy Tovar and Robert Tover will remain in office. The election will be held on May 6 at the Waelder Community Center.

Smiley city officials announced there will be no election as no one signed up to run against incumbents Robert Peck, Elisa Douglas and H. Wayne South, whose positions are up. Members Kathy Whitehead and Willie Ann Canion will retain their positions as well.
