The 2017 Texas Associated Press Sports Editors Class all-state high school football teams were released, with voting based on regular-season performances. Three Gonzales County athletes were honored, as Gonzales had one player named to the Class 4A all-state team and one honorably mentioned while Nixon-Smiley had one of their Mustangs honorably mentioned.

Senior defensive back Colby Cox was named to the first-team defense, racking up 146 tackles, 85 solos, 61 assists, seven tackles for a loss, two fumbles forced and two interceptions. Last month, Cox was unanimously voted as the defensive MVP of District 10-4AD2.

Senior defensive lineman Juan “Bull” Licea was honorably mentioned in the all-state team. He too had all-district honors a month ago, named District 10-4AD2’s lineman MVP.

In Class 3A, Nixon-Smiley’s Devin Hester was honorably mentioned as a defensive back. The two-way athlete was honorably mentioned earlier this month as a running back for District 15-3AD2.
