County cowhands take on rodeo state final

GONZALES — Two Gonzales County athletes have been competing in this year’s Texas Junior High Rodeo Association state finals at the J.B. Wells Arena.

In team roping, Buck Garza of Gonzales was currently in fourth in the first go with a time of 9.170 with Samuel Mendoza of Carrizo Springs, though Wednesday morning results were unavailable before press time. Currently at first was the duo of Mason Vaculin of Cameron and Luke Leathers of Axtell. This is Garza’s lone event of the state finals. He competes again Friday morning.

Waelder’s Kori Bigbee competes in two events this week. Bigbee’s barrels performances took place Wednesday morning and night, though results were unavailable before press time. Bigbee also teamed up with Rosanky’s Nick Young in ribbon roping on Tuesday night. They were timed at 11.150 seconds, outside the top 10. They competed again Thursday morning but results were unavailable before press time.
