County cowhands take on rodeo state final

GONZALES — Two Gonzales County athletes competed in this year’s Texas Junior High Rodeo Association state finals at the J.B. Wells Arena.

In team roping, Buck Garza of Gonzales took fourth in the first go with a time of 9.170 with Samuel Mendoza of Carrizo Springs. The duo of Mason Vaculin of Cameron and Luke Leathers of Axtell took first in that first round. Garza and Mendoz no-timed in the second go as Center’s Justin Raymond and Benton’s George Chambers took first with a time of 7.460. Vzculin and Leathers took first in the short-go with a time of 6.920 seconds.

Team roping was Garza’s lone event of the state finals.

Waelder’s Kori Bigbee competed in two events last week. In her first go, she was timed at 17.722 seconds. Taking top spot was Harley Potter of Waxahachie timed at 16.183 seconds. In the second go, Bigbee finished at 18.202 seconds. Taking first was Potter again with a time of 16.176 seconds. Potter finished off her barrel racing performance with a first-place short-go time of 16.044 seconds

Bigbee also teamed up with Rosanky’s Nick Young in ribbon roping. They were timed at 11.150 seconds, outside the top 10 in the first go. Taking first was Huntsville’s Koby DOuch and Bryan’s Tylie McDonald with a time of 6.290 seconds. Bigee and Young competed again in the second go, finishing with a time of 9.760 seconds. The duo was timed at 15.470 seconds in the short go, sixth amongst the competitors in that round. Taking first in the second go was Denton’s Riley Webb and Stephneville’s Acey Pinkston with a time of 4.750 seconds. First in the short-go was Cameron’s Mason Vaculin and Fredericksburg’s Kallyn Snedecor with a time of 6.810 seconds.
