County sees spike in sales tax revenue

Gonzales County had one of its strongest sales tax receipts month in November. Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts Glenn Hegar sent Gonzales County a total of $263,017 in rebates of local sales taxes collected by businesses in the county.

The 2019 amount is a 44.15% increase over the 2018 figure and brings the year-to-date total to over $2 million collected by the county.

Though some did better than others, all cities in county also saw increase in collections this past month. Waelder saw the largest November jump—a 104.93% increase—when compared to the previous year. Gonzales’ growth was nominal in comparison to the 2018, but a slight .28% increase still took place. Waelder leads all cities in county in year-to-date percent growth.

Outside of county, regional cities fared well as we head into holiday season. Luling’s collections jumped up 14.79% while Shiner saw an increase of 7.18%.

According to Hegar, state sales tax revenues totaled $3.18 billion in November, an 6.2% increase over last year.

“November state sales tax growth was led by collections from the wholesale trade, construction and restaurant sectors, while collections from the oil and gas mining sector declined since last year,” Hegar said via press release. “Texas realized an increase in the state’s sales tax revenue collections from remote sellers and online marketplace providers, pursuant to new collection requirements resulting from the implementation of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision, Wayfair v. South Dakota, and passage of House Bill 1525 during the 86th Texas Legislature.”
