COVID-19 spikes in Gonzales County

Posted

In Gonzales County, 15 new cases of COVID-19 were reported on Wednesday, Oct. 21. This is the largest single-day spike in reported cases since Aug. 22.

Another case was reported on Tuesday, Oct. 27 and an additional 13 cases were reported on Thursday, Oct. 29. This brings the total of new cases reported from Oct. 21 through 27 to 16. The total number of confirmed cases in the county is up to 1,164, with 23 being active, 1,132 recovered, and nine deaths reported. All of these figures are taken from daily reports distributed by County Judge Patrick C. Davis throughout the week.

Data from the Department of State Health Services current as of Thursday Oct. 29 show cases are also increasing slightly in hospitalizations. In Trauma Service Area P, an oversight region which extends from Val Verde County in the east to Gonzales County in the west, 5.8% (283) of all hospitalizations are for lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19. This is a 0.8% increase from this time last week, when 5% of all hospitalizations in the region were due to COVID-19. As long as this count remains under 15% of all hospitalizations in the Trauma Service Area, certain businesses will be allowed to remain open at 75% and bars will remain open as well.

DSHS data also shows there were a total of four new cases reported in Gonzales Independent School District for the reporting period ending on Oct. 27. This brings the total that the district has had since such data became available on Sept. 28 to nine. In Waelder Independent School District, no cases have been reported and no new cases have been reported in Nixon-Smiley Consolidated Independent School District, leaving them with a single previously reported case.
