District seeding to be decided Friday night

Beeville Jones clinched 4th seed after defeating Pleasanton

While Gonzales (4-5, 2-1) was on a bye, the playoff picture became a bit clearer in District 15-4ADI.

Beeville Jones (6-4, 1-3) outlasted Pleasanton (5-4, 0-3) 35-21 to clinch the fourth seed in district. Meanwhile, Boerne (8-1, 3-0) gave La Vernia (8-1, 2-1) their first loss of the season with a last-minute touchdown and ensuing two-point conversion to win 46-45.

Headed into the last week of district, the top three seeds are still up for grabs as Gonzales hosts Boerne and La Vernia plays at home against Pleasanton.

Here’s the verbiage of the tie breakers:

  • If two teams tie the tie breaker will be head to head.
  • In case of a tie between three teams:
    • The team with the best mutual games record (head to head) will be the highest seed. Teams “A”, “B” and “C” are tied and “Team A” beats Teams “B” and “C” in their district games, “Team A” will be awarded the position. Teams “B” and “C” would then be tied for the next available position: this position is then decided by their mutual game score: (head to head). If “Team B” beats “Team C” in their district game, then “Team B” would be awarded the next position and “Team C” would be awarded the next available position.
    • If this is not the case (no mutual game “head to head” winner), then the team having the highest number of net points, not to exceed 18 points, is awarded the position the three teams are tied for. “Team A” beats “Team B” 14-12: “Team A” shall be awarded +2 points, “Team B” shall be awarded -2 points. “Team B” beats “Team C” 10-3: “Team B” is awarded +7 points; “Team C” is awarded -7 points. “Team C” beats “Team A” 10-6: “Team C” is awarded +4 points; “Team A” is awarded -4 points. “Team A’s” total points will be -2; “Team B’s” total will be +5 points and “Team C’s” total is -3 points. “Team B” will then be awarded the position for which the three teams are tied with their +5 points. After this position has been declared, the remaining two teams will then be tied for the next available position. Teams “A” and “C” would then follow the head to head procedure. In this case, “Team C” beats “Team A”, 10 – 6, then “Team C” would be awarded the next available position and “Team A” would be awarded the next available position.

For Gonzales fans, that means the only way the Apaches can win the district championship is by beating Boerne and by Pleasanton beating La Vernia. Even if Gonzales was to beat Boerne by more than 18 points, a three-way tie would work out as follows:

  • La Vernia beat Gonzales 43-10, so +18 for LVHS, -18 for GHS
  • Boerne beat La Vernia 46-45, so +1 BHS, -1 LVHS
  • Gonzales (in this scenario) beats Boerne by 18 points or more, +18 GHS, -18 BHS.

La Vernie would have 17 net points, Gonzales would have 0 net points and Boerne would have -17 net points, giving La Vernia the first seed because of net points, then Gonzales the second seed because of the head-to-head over Boerne.

If Gonzales beats Boerne by one, the tiebreakers would still give La Vernia the advantage because they would have 17 net points, Boerne would have 0 net points and Gonzales would have -17 net points, which again crowns La Vernia the district champion and Gonzales the runner up due to head-to-head over Boerne.

In summary, here are the playoff scenarios:

Gonzales wins, La Vernia wins

  1. La Vernia (3-1)
  2. Gonzales (3-1)
  3. Boerne (3-1)
  4. Beeville Jones (1-3) locked in with head-to-head over Pleasanton

Gonzales wins, Pleasanton wins

  1. Gonzales (3-1)
  2. Boerne (3-1)
  3. La Vernia (2-2)
  4. Beeville Jones (1-3) locked in with  head-to-head over Pleasanton

Boerne wins (La Vernia vs. Pleasanton result doesn’t matter)

  1. Boerne (4-0)
  2. La Vernia (3-1 or 2-2) * has head-to-head over Gonzales
  3. Gonzales (2-2)
  4. Beeville Jones (1-3) locked in with head-to-head over Pleasanton

No math will be needed come Friday night for all teams involved. A Boerne win over Gonzales settles all four seeds. But if Gonzales wins, Apache fans will be score checking to see if Pleasanton, a more-than-capable team, pulls off the upset against La Vernia.
