Dope usage not news

Posted

As a NEWSpaper trying to justify itself your editorial policy does not support the health of the Gonzales community; shock is not news, nor is dope usage among the youth news yet that topic always fills your front page. It may be sad and it may also be true but it is not news; it is a problem as common as potholes in the street. More tragically, it ruins the lives of those unfortunate youth who practice the folly. It is not news that youth are known for doing stupid things but fixing it permanently for all of history to see is not in the public interest; the sitting President did the exact same thing in his youth but he was allowed some slack and some think he turned out OK. Why can't you cut some slack for the local kids who have a hard time getting their act together? Why can't you mention their folly less prominently on a back page and use the front page to tell the good things happening in our town, the traditional function of newspapers? Why can't you be constructive and tell us (and them) of budding opportunities, rather than focus on failures? Haven't you ever heard the old proverb; "You don't build things with a sledge hammer"?
