Early voting continues for Gonzales County school board spots

GONZALES — Officials for Nixon-Smiley and Waelder school boards announced whose spots will be up for the 2016 election.

For NSCISD, Place 1 incumbent Angelina Salinas has announced she will not be running. Vying for her position will be Mary Ann Fatheree and Mark Mendez.

In Place 5, Maria Rios Griffin will run against incumbent Lester Warzecha.

In Place 7, Incumbent Jimmy Newman will run unopposed.

Bud Box, Richard Lott, Clay Allen and Jake Robinson are not up for election and will retain their positions.

Nixon-Smiley CISD early voting will run through May 3 at Nixon City Hall, the Smiley Fire Station and Leesville Methodist Church. The times are from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Election day is May 7 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Nixon City Hall.

For Waelder ISD, which is at-large, board members Avery Williams and Chris Mindieta’s seats are up, and Troy Sullivan will run against them. Incumbents Joann Ibarra, Cathy Hernandez, Diana Olmos, Denis Goode and Dora Noyola are not up for election and will retain their positions.

In Waelder, early voting for today will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 201 US HWY 90. Additional early voting days are May 2-3 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. This will take place at the WISD campus central office. Election Day will be held May 7 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Waelder Community Center.

As a reminder, Gonzales ISD canceled their election since no candidates filed to face the incumbents. District 1 Trustee Gloria Torres and District 2 Trustee Justin Schwausch both filed for re-election but were unopposed in their bids for a new term.
