Early voting ends Friday

Gonzales County is still seeing large numbers of early voting, with 2,595 registered voters having been to the polls as of Wednesday. There's still time to cast your ballot, as the early boxes will be open today and tomorrow.

Early voting stands at 24.58 percent of registered county voters. This shatters the early vote totals from the 2014 gubernatorial election and might eclipse all of the total voters for that election as well. That year, total votes reached a paltry 39.91 percent.

And while some voting systems across the state have seen scrutiny — mainly with the eSlate electronic voting machines allegedly changing choices for straight ticket voting — no such skullduggery has been accused here. Gonzales County uses old-school paper ballots that are read with an optical scanning device. The only way to change a vote on the ballot is by the intended hand of the voter and their pencil.

Still, it always helps to double-check your ballot before you hand it in to make sure you didn't succumb to personal human error.

Early voting remains open in Waelder and Nixon until 4:45 p.m. Friday. The polls at the Randle-Rather Building in Gonzales will remain open until 7 p.m. Friday. Seeing as how there is no Apache football game to rush off to this week, that would be a great time to practice your civic duty.

Voting resumes again on Tuesday, which is Election Day. Voters must vote in their assigned precinct on that day. Polls will be open 7 a.m.-7 p.m., and voters should remember to bring a government issued ID with them in order to vote.
