Edwin Charles Chumchal, 95, completed his journey on earth peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 12. He was the 10th of 15 children, born Nov. 4, 1923 to John and Christina (Slovacek) Chumchal on the family farm at Dilworth.

He attended Dilworth school and in 1940 started working at the Gonzales Cotton Mill. When he turned 19 years old on Nov. 4, 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at Brooks Field, San Antonio, as an air plane mechanic. He was stationed in Texas, Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma and Georgia before being discharged in February 1946 in San Antonio. He was a member of Shiner American Legion Post #201 and Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church. He always responded to news good or bad with “God Bless America”

On Tuesday, Feb. 12, 1945 he married Gladys Seidenberger in Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Shiner by Rev. Rudolph Hoffman. After his discharge they returned to the Kokernot area for him to farm, ranch and to be self-employed with his dump truck. Most knew him as “Papa Ed” with his family of five generations gathering for butchering hogs and farm life. He loved listening to polka music, loved family gatherings with lots of love, laughter and storytelling of the “good ole days.”

Survivors are his beloved wife of 73 years and 11 months, Gladys Chumchal; three daughters Barbara Maxey (Robert), Beverly Chumchal and Karen Spann (Rodney); two sons Ronnie Chumchal (Barbara) and Greg Chumchal (Judy) all of Shiner; 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; brother Alfred “Fred” Chumchal ; numerous nieces and nephews; his beloved puppy “Happy”.

He is preceded in death by his parents; eight brothers and five sisters.

Rosary 6:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 14 at Thiele Cooper Funeral Home.

Funeral Mass 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 15 at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church with Rev. Tony Pesek officiating. Burial at Shiner Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Lynn and Brent Mascheck, Jaace Chumchal, Devin and Brian Lehnert, Ross and Ryan Spann and Jared Chumchal.

Honorary pallbearers are grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Shiner Volunteer Fire Dept.
