Eleazar Garza Sr. went on his way on Friday, Jan. 10 at the age of 83.

Funeral Services are under the direction of Buffington Funeral Home in Gonzales, Texas, and will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. at Buffington Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Gonzales Memorial Park Cemetery in Gonzales, Texas. Visitation will be at Buffington Funeral Home on Friday, Jan. 17 from 5-9 p.m.

Eleazar was born on July 25, 1936 in Los Saenz, Star County, Texas. He was the son of Miguel Jr. and Ramona (Diaz) Garza.

His brother, Romeo Garza and his sister, Lydia Acosta and one grandson, Marcus Garza, Jr. preceded him on his journey. Brother Eli and sisters, Efida, Mandy and Rosa still walk the Earth.

He married Sarah Pat Johnson on April 23, 1960, and they became one. They have six children; Eleazar “Eddie” Garza, Jr. and his wife, Susie, Ramona A. Garza Reese, Karen L. Garza Bayl and her husband, Kevin, Tina M. Garza and husband to be, Nick Clark, Marcus Garza Sr., Juan M. Garza, and a nephew, David A. Johnson who has went on his journey.

Mr. Eleazar Garza, known as Ed or Eddie and wife Sarah have 21 grandchildren, and 50 great-grandchildren.

Master Eleazar Garza Sr. was a hardworking man.

He attended Kennedy High School.

He was in the United States Air Force. He did his training in Amarillo, Texas, and then he was transferred to Juneau, Alaska, and then to New Mexico as a cook.

After the Air Force, he held many manager jobs in food establishments in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He then began working for Jimmy R. Smith as a laborer. He then went to work for Lockley Air Force Base. He trained working for Oil Dynamics. It lead Eleazar and his family to Big Spring, Texas, working on aircraft at Webb Air Force Base. Ed, his wife, and family stayed for a while in Big Spring. He was a coach for Howard County Boxing Club, was in L.U.L.A.C. and active in politics, not as running for any office, but campaigning for his choices. He liked Loui Brown & Pat Deanda. He had many friends & family.

Next, Mister Garza went to work for Baker Hughes and moved to Gonzales, Texas since he traveled internationally, he didn’t get into many outside things. But, he sure told everyone that South Texas and Gonzales was – God’s Country – He loved to fish and have a cold one by the river.

His passions ran like this, work, family. Car racing, he raced at one time. Boxing coach, and of course, the famous Garza’s BBQs. Reading the newspaper, and playing Sudoku, few people could beat him at checkers and dominoes.

Pallbearers for Mr. Garza will be; Brian Garza, Anthony Garza, Timothy Rose, Casey Rose, Danny Ruiz, and JJ Garza. Honorary Pallbearers will be; Eddie Garza, Marcus Garza, Juan M. Garza, Steven Rose, Kevin Bayl III, Michael Garza, and John “JR” Robinson.
