Essie Mae Bates was born Sept. 1, 1935 to S.D. Harvey and Gertrude Harvey. She was raised in Waelder, Texas and attended school in the Mount Eden School District of Gonzales County.

Essie Mae was baptized at a young age and was a member of the Union Lea Missionary Baptist Church. She was a faithful member of the church and was a servant of the Usher Board. To know Ms. Essie was to love her. She had a beautiful smile and will be truly missed by all who knew her. Ms. Essie loved her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons; Freddie Brown and LV Brown, Jr., two sisters; Myrtle B. Johnson and Lue Ella McNeil, and six brothers; Dutto McNeil, Fred Harvey, Manor Harvey, Mitchell McNeil, SD Harvey, Jr., and Willie McNeil.

She leaves to cherish her memory, two sons; Jesse Brown, Sr. (Susan), of Del Valle, Texas, Zillman Brown of San Antonio, Texas. Four daughters; Mary Brown of Austin, Texas, Fannie Lackey of Houston, Texas, Faye Fuller (Charles) of San Antonio, Texas and Dorothy Jean Brown (Mark) of San Antonio, Texas. Three sisters; Cloma Lee Harvey of San Antonio, Texas, Gerthie Pettit of San Antonio, Texas and Nora Harvey of San Antonio, Texas. Thirty-One(31) grandchildren and Ten (10) great grandchildren. And a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
