Ester Louise “Weezie” Blissett Jones, 79, of Gonzales, passed away Saturday, April 22. Louise was born March 6, 1938 in Bellzoni, MS to Estele Garrett Blissett and Audrey Louise Holloway Blissett. Louise would be the only child born to this union. She grew up in Mississippi and moved to Houston, TX in 1956 and finally to Gonzales in 1971.

Louise married Ronald “Mac” McAllister on September 21, 1977 in Gonzales and Mac preceded her in death on July 24, 1991. Mac was a rancher and Louise loved working cattle on horseback. She typically rode Lillie Bell or Bullet, but her favorite horse was Jody, a horse that worked just as hard as Louise and shared the same temperament. Therein lied the problem, if Louise didn’t push cattle the right way, ol’ Jody would put Louise on the ground as if to say, “we’re going to do this my way.” On her best day, Louise stood 5 foot tall and weighed in at 100 pounds, but there was little this firecracker of a woman couldn’t do or wouldn’t try that a real cowboy does every day. Louise could ride with the best of the ol’ time cowboys. Pushing and penning cattle, vaccinating, castrating, loading and pulling a stock trailer to the sale barn to sell cattle and backing that trailer up to the loading dock to haul off purchased stock was all part of the job and Louise did it all and stood a little bit taller in the eyes of those working beside her.

Louise was popularly known as “Weezie” to her many loyal restaurant customers she served through the years while working at Raymond Peterek’s “The Lunch Box”, Carl and Joan Aker’s “Doughnut Shop”, “Beverley’s Family Restaurant” on Highway 90A, “The Alcalde Restaurant” and the “Cow Palace.” Weezie always had a quick retort for those petulant customers that loved to teasingly torment her and she loved them for breaking up the monotony of waitressing through these fun loving verbal jousts (which she always won). Louise ended her working career in 2012 while still serving others at the “Long Branch Saloon”.

Louise always worked hard, but when time permitted she loved to dance and any country western song playing within earshot was the perfect time to dance. She met Charles David Jones, who also loved to dance, and they married on April 16, 1993 at “Lottie’s”. Certainly this was the largest wedding and reception that “Lottie’s” had ever hosted.

Throughout their marriage Louise and David devoted many hours of service to VFW Post 4817. Together they worked tirelessly to make each event sponsored by the VFW a huge success. Louise had a “secret” ticket buyer list she developed over many years, consisting of friends, acquaintances and businesses that would only buy tickets for VFW events from her and the list was very large.

Louise is survived by her devoted husband of 24 years, David Jones of Gonzales, cousins, Mary Hitchcock of Houston, Kathy “Kat” Horn of Shreveport, LA, Margaret Garrett, Ruby Rogers, and Roy Blissett, Jr. all of Vicksburg, MS. Louise is also survived by her cherished friends James and Brenda Parks of Eufaula, AL, Dorothy Gast, Linda and Dick Kuentzler and Deidra Voight all of Gonzales and VFW Post 4817’s auxiliary and members. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, A.G. who was killed in an automobile accident with his father in 1967 and a beloved cousin Peggy Jean Blissett Rogers.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 24 in Gonzales Memorial Park. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Seydler-Hill Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the VFW Post 4817 in continued devotion of Louise’s love and support of the VFW. Services are under the care and direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home. Condolences may be left online at www.seydlerhillfuneralhome.com.
