Farmer’s Market this Friday

Organizers of the Gonzales Farmer’s Market are hoping to improve the market, but they need community help and involvement.

According to Cynthia Green, the organizer of the local Farmer’s Market that is held at Thrive every second Friday of the month, the market needs more vendors and more people to browse the produce and wares that are there.

“We have been doing this for awhile now,” Green said, “but we are not getting the number of vendors we would like nor are we getting the foot traffic we need to sustain a great community event like this.

“I want to let people know that we are open from noon to 6 p.m. when we host the market the second Friday of each month, but this week we are holding a second one because of the produce that is ready this time of year.”

According to Green, the Gonzales Farmer’s Market has a huge advantage over other markets from a sustainability point of view: it’s held indoors!

“For vendors, they don’t have to worry about the weather, whether it’s raining or if it’s oppressively hot outside,” she said. “Since we hold ours indoors, weather is not an issue. Plus, it’s a big advantage for shoppers because they can shop in an air-conditioned environment.”

Green also noted that there may be a misconception about what a Farmer’s Market is.

“It’s not just produce — although we would like a lot more produce vendors to attend,” Green said. “Our Farmer’s Market will cater to anything agricultural. For instance, if someone is word worker, they would be a natural for our market. We have meat vendors, handcrafted jewelry, bath and body products, and other types of things. People should come out and see what we have to offer, and more vendors to sell their products and bring attention to what they have to offer.”

Green noted there is a nominal $15 fee for a booth, but that is just to cover the cost of liability for hosting the event. Attending the market is free.
