Frances Josephine Myers, 94, of Gonzales, passed away Sunday, Nov. 15, 2015. Frances was born June 19, 1921 in Greenwood, Miss. to Jefferson Frank Short and Doris Elise Kea Short.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Gonzales.

Frances was an only child and early in her life her family moved to Macon, Miss. which she called her home town. She graduated high school in Macon with the Class of 1939.

Her first job out of high school was working as an office secretary for Dr. Thigpen before going to work for a law office. Frances attended Mississippi Women’s College to advance her secretarial skills.

She married Lamar Switzer in Columbus and one daughter was born of this union.  She went to work as a secretary at the Strategic Air Command base in Columbus while much of the base was still under construction. Frances went to work for Burgin and Gholson Attorneys at Law located on Lawyers Row in Columbus.

She was a hard working single parent, dedicated to raising and providing for her daughter and performing her duties as a secretary to the very best of her ability. She married Erwin Nelson Myers on Jan. 13, 1968 in Columbus and retired shortly thereafter.

Frances enjoyed reading, playing bridge and watching professional football, especially the Green Bay Packers because Brett Farve was from Mississippi, too. She enjoyed crappie fishing in Lake Norris and hunting dove at the camp house with her husband, Nelson.

Frances was respectful of all people; she was generous, especially to those in need. Her kindness was genuine, her manner as honorable and as expected from a true southern lady.

Frances Josephine Myers is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Mary Frances Nelson and Rev. Elbert Lee Nelson of Harwood; granddaughter Melinda Gail Lowe and her husband Jeffery of Columbus, Miss.; and great-grandchildren, Katelyn Elise Lowe and Jeffery Taylor Lowe of Columbus, Miss.
