GISD Principals provide updates ahead of school start at Board of Trustees meeting

Posted

Principals of each campus provided updates regarding their plans and procedures to the Gonzales Independent School District Board of Trustees at their regular meeting Monday, August 10, 2020.

In these updates, Principals indicated how much students would be mixing with different classes and teachers, and how much schedules had been changed to hinder the spread of COVID-19 among students. For students in Pre-K through second, their classes will be self-contained. Students in grades third through fifth at Gonzales Elementary School will move between classrooms in core blocks for different subjects, as will sixth through eighth grade students at Gonzales Intermediate. Students at Gonzales Junior High and High School will be moving to a block schedule, leaving students in fewer classrooms for longer periods during the day, in order to reduce transitions between classes.

Gonzales High School athletics will also be changing in accordance with state and UIL regulations, limiting the number of people allowed in the stands and what kinds of tickets are available to be purchased, as well as limiting the ways they can be purchased.

Other agenda items which were discussed at the meeting include:

  • Approved updates to Student Handbook and Student Code of Conduct, including provisions for DAP and expulsion placement students in the event that the entire district moves to the online asynchronous model.
  • Updates to bus routes for county and city bus riders were presented, showing a reduced number of routes going through the city of Gonzales.
  • Updates concerning the district 2018-2019 Financial report, 504 Operating Guidelines report and Superintendent’s report.

It was also announced that while the remaining 2,200 Chromebooks for the GISD one to one program are expected to be delivered either Friday, August 14, or Monday, August 17, there are contingency plans in place to ensure students are able to begin learning right away.
