GONZALES — Members of the community who want to make a difference can do so. The date has been set for a filing deadline and School Board hopefuls have until mid February to put their name in the hat.

During a regularly scheduled school board meeting, Gonzales Independent School District announced application packets will be available from Jan. 17 until the filing deadline on Feb. 16. Election day is set for May 5.

GISD has reported Josie Smith-Wright (District 4) and Tom Lester Jr.’s (District 7) seats are up this election.

Candidates may apply in person at the GISD Administration Office, located at 1711 N. Sarah DeWitt Dr. Office hours are from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., however, on deadline day the office will remain open until 5 p.m.

In other business, GISD Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Strozier, honored the school board for their continued support of the district.

“They are the biggest servant leaders out there,” Strozier said of the board. “They are here committed and dedicated, caring about kids, working providing hours and hours and hours of advisory, or decision making and they do it all for the kids out of the kindness of their hearts because there is no compensation. The compensation is student success and I can tell you that our GISD school board is committed to helping us in anyway way to promote student success.”

Strozier presented each school board member with a certificate of appreciation.

The next regularly scheduled meeting is set for 5:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 12, in the Gonzales Junior High School Library.
