GISD to provide meals to community children

Posted

Gonzales ISD has recently been approved to shift from operating the National School Breakfast and Lunch Program (NSBP/NSLP) to the Seamless Summer Program (SSO) starting Nov. 2, 2020, through June 30, 2021. Meals will continue to be served during school days and are free for all students attending Gonzales ISD. SSO also allows the district to provide free breakfast and lunch meals during school days to families in the community who have children 18 years old and under who are not attending school.

Parents who would like to pick up meals for children not attending school must contact the North Avenue Cafeteria Manager at 830-672-9557, extension 4930, or at 1032 Saint Joseph St. The cafeteria entrance is by the loading dock on the Saint Paul side of North Avenue School. Parents must either bring the child each time they are picking up meals or bring the child on the first visit with proof of the child's age. If the children are of school age, the manager will check that the child is not enrolled in GISD. Once the age and not attending school is verified, the manager will then record the family name and the children they are picking up meals for. Further proof would then not be necessary to pick up meals.

Breakfast is available from 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Parents can set up with the manager if they prefer to pick up daily prepared meals at the times listed (let the manager know the time when picking up meals) or if they would like to pick up breakfast and lunch meals for the week (for heating at home) on a Monday or Tuesday of each week. Each time parents come to pick up meals, face masks are required, and they should ring the bell at the back door of North Avenue Cafeteria by the loading dock.
