Gonzales athletes nominated for ‘student athlete of the year’

Two Gonzales High School student-athletes were nominated for the 2Words Character Development scholarship. The scholarship is for students who exemplify strong character, humility and care for their community.

Seniors Haley Garza and Juan Licea have been nominated to win the $1,000 scholarship. The scholarship winner would be awarded the 2018 Texas Student Athlete of the Year Award, $1,000 Letterman to Leader scholarship and 18 weeks of character development curriculum for their school.

"Both are outstanding on the field, off the field and in the classroom," Gonzales Athletic Director Kodi Crane said. "Both have competed at the highest level, but have also been a huge role model for the youth of Gonzales, Texas."

According to 2words.tv, the organization looks for student-athletes who:

  • Use their influence to benefit others.
  • Lift up and motivate others to recognize their strengths and become leaders themselves.
  • Invest in improving their school and community.
  • Aren’t afraid to admit their weaknesses and learn from their mistakes.
  • Exemplify excellent dedication to their education and have a hunger for learning.
  • Are graduating seniors at a 2A-6A classification Texas high school.

The scholarship is awarded to the student with the most votes. Voting opened March 19 and ends March 30 with winners announced on Monday, April 2.
