GONZALES — After months of financial planning and discussion Gonzales City Council voted Tuesday night to establish the city's maximum Ad Valorem Tax Rate.

Councilman District 4, Dan Blakemore made the motion to set the Maximum Ad Valorem Tax rate at 27.5 (.275).

Councilman District 2, Tommy Schurig made the second, which opened the issue for discussion.

In 2016-2017 the city had a tax base of $369,533,040 – representing the value of all taxable properties in the City of Gonzales – and an effective tax rate of $.1769, or $176.90 per $100,000 valuation.

The net taxable base for the 2017-2018 fiscal year is $379 million. At the proposed maximum tax rate the city's property tax income would be $1,044,641.95. At the $2016-2017 rate the city would have taken in $403,142 less in tax income.

Gonzales Mayor Connie Kacir said the impact of the increase to a tax payer with a property valuation of $100,000 would be an additional $8.17 per month.

The rate passed unanimously.

The final tax rate will be set at the end of September.
