Gonzales early voter turnout booms, rest of county lags

County-wide voting will resume Saturday, May 4

Early voting for Gonzales’s mayoral and charter amendment election is off to a soaring start. The same could not be said for the rest of the county. Voters in Gonzales, Nixon, Waelder and Smiley still have to the chance to make their voices heard on election day, Saturday, May 4. Polls across the county will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on election day. More details on candidates and polling locations can be found below.

A whopping 803 total voters turned out to the polls in Gonzales’s early voting period. The last contested mayoral election in 2014 saw only voters 557 turnout for the whole election. Connie Kacir, Rob Brown and Bob Burchard are all running to be mayor of Gonzales. Unlike other elections around the county, the seat is not at-large but rather the winner must secure a majority, or 50 percent of the vote plus one vote, to be declared a winner. If no clear winner is present after votes are totaled, the election goes to a runoff. The ballot also features 11 purposed amendments to the city’s home rule charter. The election day polling location is at the Gonzales Municipal Building, 820 St. Joseph Street, Gonzales, Texas 78629 and polls will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

In Nixon’s city council election, 76 in-person and mail-in votes have been counted thus far. There are five candidates, Joseph “Joey” Bjorgaard, Justin La Fleur, Mary Ann Fatheree, Michael Scherrer and Estevan “Steve” Aguirre, competing for three at-large seats in that election. Those hoping to vote on election day should stop by Saturday, May 4 at Nixon City Hall, 100 West Third Street, Nixon, Texas 78140 between the hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Only 34 total votes have been cast in the Waelder Independent School District’s Board of Trustees election. Two at-large seats are being contested by Avery Williams, Troy Sullivan and Anita Torres Mar. Note that the election day polling location In Waelder differs from the early voting place. Election day voters should go to the Waelder Community Center, 311 U.S. Highway 90 West, Waelder, Texas 78959 between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 4.

Smiley has seven candidates vying for three at-large city council seats, but only 16 voters performed their civic duty in the early voting period. Linda Warzecha, Elisa Douglas, Deborah Peña, Jason A. Montoya, Teresa South, Diana Pena Moreno and Michael Garrott Jr. are all gunning for the openings. The location for election day voting on Saturday, May 4 is at the Smiley Volunteer Fire Department, 208 FM 108 North, Smiley, Texas 78159. Voting on election day is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
