Gonzales EMS considers action regarding Nixon station

Posted

The Gonzales Emergency Services District No. 1 discussed the possibility of building a new station in Nixon, as well as updating the station in Gonzales on St. Joseph Street at its regular meeting on Sept. 17, 2020.

At the Nixon City Council’s August meeting, the payment of rent to the city by Gonzales EMS for use of the Nixon station was floated and ultimately tabled after EMS-ESD Executive Director Eddie Callender, Jr. made the council aware of functional issues with the building relating to sleeping quarters and water which enters the building when it rains. At the EMS-ESD meeting, the idea for building a completely new facility was discussed, along with the possibility of building it on county land, near Precinct 4 Justice-of-the-Peace Darryl Becker’s office with the approval of the County Commisioners.

The Commissioners of the EMS-ESD board also discussed whether hiring an architect was necessary, determining that they would need to consult with the county attorney before moving forward.

In other business:

  • With no one having signed up to give public comment, the Commissioners discussed quotes and presentations for Auditors and chose an $8,900 bid from Armstrong Vaughan & Associates, which operates out of Universal City, near San Antonio.
  • The Commissioners approved the consent agenda, which included the payment of pending bills, such as the contract with Armstrong Vaughan & Associates, minutes from the regular Aug. meeting as well as the Aug. 7 and 21 Special Meetings, Receipt of verbal activity reports and the hard copies of EMS & Rescue Aug. financial reports.
  • For the month of Aug. 2020, the EMS-ESD collected 98.2% of taxes, with a delinquent amount of just over $12,000.
  •  The board took no action on Agenda item nine, given that no matters of discussion were presented.
  • Callender gave a report, as the District Administrator, of ESD-EMS activity including partnerships with other EMS districts and preparation of resources for local football games, among other activities.
