In an emergency meeting called last week, the Gonzales ISD school board unanimously approved a resolution delegation of authority to Superintendent John Schumacher in response to COVID-19. The resolution gives Schumacher expanded authority in the district.

The list of authority includes:

  • Make all decisions regarding payment of employees during an emergency closure
  • Altering the Gonzales ISD 2019-20 school calendar
  • Seek any necessary waivers from the Texas Educational Agency regarding missed instructional days, low attendance or any other matters related to the emergency closure
  • Authority to declare a catastrophe and take all actions as appropriate
  • Act in place of the board regarding procurement, negotiation and execution of contracts for goods and services that are necessary to effectuate the administrative actions

Though not an agenda item, the board also discussed pushing their May 2 election to a later date. The action item will be formalized in the regularly-scheduled meeting on April 13. The board is expected to push the election to a later date “on or before November 2.”
