Happy Birthday VFW 4817 Gonzales

Posted

On Nov. 27, the Gonzales Post 4817 turned 72 years old.

The real question is, will it be 73? Membership is down at the Post, state and nation. We are at this time 33,000 members down from the same timeframe as last year across the nation.

The smaller the VFW becomes, the less power we have in Austin, and Washington D.C. at getting new legislation passed and protecting the rights we have already earned as veterans.

Over the years, the VFW has fought for and gotten passed many laws to protect our veterans. They fight for education, medical, housing and job protection.

We also support our National Home for Families and staff for our National Home for Children in Eaton Rapids, Mich.

We donate to many programs though the VFW on a national level.

On the local level, we donate to many programs in Gonzales. Some of them are Beta Sigma Phi for Christmas gifts for foster children, Young Farmers, Friends of the Library, 4th of July bike parade and bike giveaway, JRNROTC, Education Foundation, Relay for Life, Gonzales Veterans Memorial, and our Auxiliary has many projects they donate to.

What we need to keep this Post having more birthdays is for the veterans that are eligible to join us and keep this Post alive and well. We need you as members of this VFW Post to help our veterans, community and keep our fight alive in Austin and Washington D.C.
