A hit-and-run claimed the life of a Shiner man on Saturday, officials say.
Shiner Police Chief Ronnie Leck reported that at 12:40 p.m. March 18, first responders were dispatched to the 1400 block of North Ave. E. in Shiner, where a car had struck a man mowing his grass near the roadway. The car had fled the scene after the incident, Leck said.
Shiner man was pronounced dead at the scene after a hit-and-run Saturday afternoon, said Shiner Police Chief Ronnie Leck.
According to the report, a 2001 Mercury was headed westbound on U.S. 90A and struck 55-year-old Leslie Hanzel Jr., 55, of Shiner. The driver, identified as 34-year-old April Riley, fled the scene after hitting Hanzel, Leck said.
Riley was arrested at 5:30 p.m. at a residence in Gonzales County and taken to Lavaca County Jail, Leck said.
Riley is charged with accident involving death - failure to render aid, a second-degree felony.
At 2 p.m., Hanzel was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Mark Ivey. Officials said Hanzel was employed with the city of Shiner as a groundskeeper.
