Gonzales remembered its heroes last Friday, as over 150 people attended a solemn ceremony at the shrine memorializing the Immortal 32 on the grounds of the Gonzales Historic Museum.
After an opening welcome from Gonzales Director of Tourism Ashley Simper, speakers Glenda Gordan, former county judge David Bird, Mayor Connie Kacir and Andy Rodriguez made comments about the importance of the day to Gonzales and to the memory of the fallen Immortal 32.
Forrest Byas, a volunteer at the Alamo and a member of the Alamo Citizens Advisory Committee, presented Mayor Kacir a flag that flew over the Alamo on Texas Independence Day. Andy Rodriguez read off the names of the Immortal 32 before a group of young actors from the Crystal Theater presented a small play honoring the Immortal 32. Direct descendants of the Immortal 32 and Sons and Daughters of the Republic of Texas presented yellow roses to rest on the ground by the shrine.
Gonzales Junior ROTC presented the colors to begin the ceremony, and a member of the Gonzales High School Band played Taps to end the emotional ceremony. Hugh Shelton paid homage to our fallen heroes by dressing in period regalia while mounted on a horse during the activities.
Afterwards, a special luncheon was held on the grounds of the museum for family members and leaders of the business and historic community.
